PlayStation Studios Buys Returnal Developer Housemarque.
Sony just bought the oldest Finnish gaming studio Housemarque, the developers behind PS5 exclusive Returnal. The acquisition decision was announced on Twitter and the Tweet also hinted at an upcoming acquisition involving Bluepoint Games.
The Tweet made by PlayStation Japan announced the acquisition of Housemarque but uploaded an image on which Bluepoint was written beside PS Studios. This maybe isn’t just a mistake but hints at the upcoming Sony acquisition.
In a blog post, PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst shared his thoughts and said the studio, “is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community.” The studio is publishing games since 1995 and made superhit titles like Dead Nation, Resogun, Matterfall, and Super Stardust HD. Housemarque has published games on several platforms like iOS, PC, and Xbox 360, however, the majority of its titles were PS exclusives. Besides Returnal, The Finnish studio is famous for Super Stardust games on PS3, PS4, and PSP.
House-marque’s co-founder Ilari Kuittinen said, “We are so excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family, this gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform.”
