Amazon oh Amazon! Cancels Crucible.
If you are a fan of Crucible, the happy days are over for you. Amazon has decided to shut it down for good and the servers will go offline on November 9th this year.
The sad, or maybe, the harsh decision came just over five months after launch. The free-to-play multiplayer shooter Crucible had got its most recent roadmap of features and after careful examination of players’ feedback by the developers, the decision was made to cut it short.
In a blog post from Amazon’s Relentless Studios team, the statement read, “We very much appreciate the way that our fans have rallied around our efforts, and we’ve loved seeing your responses to the changes we’ve made over the last few months, but ultimately we didn’t see a healthy, sustainable future ahead of Crucible.”
The blog post further read, “We’ll be transitioning our team to focus on New World and other upcoming projects from Amazon Games.”
Moreover, Amazon is also offering full refunds to any in-game purchases made and is all set to disable matchmaking in the coming weeks and eventually will shut down the custom servers on the 9th of November 2020.
Now let’s talk about some stats here, Crucible was launched in May this year with a slow but steady start; the peak reached by the game was 25000 players at the time of the launch. The number of concurrent players drastically dropped in June to hundreds only. Assessing the situation, Amazon decided to move the game back into closed beta following player feedback. The objective to go back to the closed beta was to improve the boss-focused Heart of the Hives mode.
If you have a strong memory unlike mine, you should remember that this is not the first time Amazon has publically canceled a game project. In 2018, they canceled the sci-fi/fantasy sports title Breakaway.
Amazon has a AAA+ game in development these days and it will get launched sometime in 2021 spring. We hope that their second attempt at AAA release won’t get canceled. Fingers crossed.
