PlayStation & Discord
In recent reports, PlayStation has made a minority investment in Discord and now has a stake in the online communication service. The investment will pave the way to integrate and build a relationship between Discord and Sony.
In a recent blog post, PlayStation’s president and CEO Jim Ryan shared that PlayStation has obtained minority stakes in Discord. Apart from disclosing information about investment, there isn’t much insight shared at the moment. The blog further shared that the minority stake was taken by PlayStation in Discord’s Series H round. Moreover, PlayStation also got in touch with the online communication service co-founders Stan Vishnevskiy and Jason Citron and discussed ways to devise ways to bring communities together.
The post read, “Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do,” Ryan writes. “[S]o we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
The details surfaced are limited at the moment. This collaboration can either result in a unique and proficient the online communication service app coming to PlayStation consoles or just account integrations. This is something we will have to wait for as there will be news in the coming months.

Moreover, their community is massive and is growing at a steady pace with over 140 million active users. The news of PlayStation’s minority investment came after Discord decided to stay independent. Earlier, Discord was approached by Microsoft and two other companies for a buyout which the online communication service rejected. Microsoft offered $10 billion but negotiations broke down after the online communication service decided to stay independent.
As for PlayStation’s minority investment in the company is concerned, the details have yet to surface. Whether it is an official online communication service integration into PlayStation or there are other plans, we will have to wait for it. Whatever the case may be, PlayStation is all set to work with the online communication service in some capacity.
