NFT (Non Fungible Token) is an emerging technology that allows users to trade virtual items on the blockchain. The first generation of NFT games was released by Enjin Coin in 2017.
NFTs and NFT games, or NFT gaming, are something that you must have already heard about. The term “NFT” became massively popular a couple of years ago, involving sales of millions of dollars. If you recall Nyan Cat NFT, Grimes, and many others, you know well how much money is involved in NFT. But many of us aren’t aware of what NFTs are. What are NFT games? How do they work? What are digital assets? Let’s find the answers here in a simple manner.
What is NFT?
Let’s begin with the basics, shall we? What’s an NFT? A non-fungible token—well, it does not make it any clearer. So, let’s dissect it a bit here. Non-fungible means something is unique and is not replaceable in any form with something else. Consider a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin or Ether, which are fungible; you can trade one for the other and end up with exactly the same thing.
On the contrary, an NFT is non-fungible, you can’t have the same NFT after exchanging it with another. Every NFT trading card is unique and entirely different from any other NFT trading card in existence. Moreover, every NFT trade has a record on a decentralized digital ledger, and most of them use the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum blockchain technology keeps a record of NFT owners and trading history. If you aren’t sure what a blockchain or blockchain game is, then click here.
So, What can become an NFT? And What’s the Point?
Anything digital in the world of the internet can become an NFT (for example, music, digital art, gifs, AI, tweets, posts, etc.) But, since anyone can copy, download, snap a picture of, or make a copy of anything digital, what is the point of an NFT?
The question is legit, but every original has a fake copy, a second, third, or fourth copy. However, the original resides with only one person, so the bragging rights, yes, and the flex, of course. Moreover, you are also supporting your favorite artists by buying their NFTs. You also get basic usage rights like using the image online in any way you like.
So, what are NFT games?
NFT games offer players in-game rewards in the shape of NFTs that hold value, are unique, and are rare. These games are popular in the Gamefi world because they allow both creators and players to earn money. Most of the NFT games use Ethereum and BNB smart contracts. In-game NFTs come in different shapes and sizes, and some games offer collectible characters like in CyrptoKitties, Axie Infinity, Cryptoblades, etc. while other NFT games offer collectible cards like Sorare, Gods Unchained, and others.
How do NFTs Work in NFT Games?
NFT games have their own rules, regulations, mechanisms, and player interaction systems. A game may let you have your avatar character as an NFT, in-game digital assets or items you find may become NFTs, or you may as well mint your own creation as an NFT. However, if you are to create, trade, or implement an NFT, then you need to adhere to smart contracts that define the rules of NFT usage.
