Guillemot Highlights Actions Taken by Ubisoft to Prevent Workplace Abuse.

In 2020, Ubisoft was subject to severe criticism after workplace allegations surfaced. There were several allegations, some of them include workplace abuse, sexual harassment, and physical assault.

Moreover, Ubisoft was also accused of promoting a culture of sexism, lack of diversity, and workplace misconduct. These allegations lead to the resignation of multiple executives including the VP Maxime Beland. Soon after the allegations, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot promised “profound changes” in the company.

A year has passed since the ‘promise’ but there aren’t any notable changes in Ubisoft. Le Telegramme, a French paper, published a recent report where several Ubisoft employees feel that the company hasn’t changed a bit. The report was published a week ago and fans took to social media and rallied under a banner; #HoldUbisoftAccountable.

Earlier this week Ubisoft responded without referencing the online campaign and Le Telegramme report. Guillemot released a statement highlighting the steps taken by Ubisoft to prevent workplace mistreat. According to him, employees can now report misconduct anonymously, mandatory anti-harassment training, assessment of workplace culture through questionnaires and focus groups, and HR audit via the third party.

On the other hand, Solidaries Informatique Jeu Video, a games workers union, will proceed with legal action against Ubisoft. Games worker Union told Le Telegramme that the recent new appointments made by Ubisoft won’t yield any results and they “don’t expect anything” from these recent appointments. However, the Union agreed that with the recent appointment of Christophe Derennes as head of Ubisoft Montreal, the Canadian part of Ubisoft has considerably improved.

The article published on Le Telegramme was directed to highlight the instances of inaction and insufficient steps from Ubisoft. Moreover, gamers and fans urged the public to stop buying Ubisoft games after the recent report.
