Razer oh Razer!
Personal data breach or leak is always a nightmare. A cybersecurity researcher, Volodymyr Diachenko discovered that the personal data of gaming users was available and accessible on Razer’s website due to a server misconfiguration. The accident exposed the personal information of more than 100,000 gamers for almost a month.
Customers that placed orders on Razer’s digital store provided their addresses, emails, phone numbers, and products that they ordered. All of this information was made public due to an accident, thankfully credit card information wasn’t included.
Diachenko contacted the Razer support as soon as he discovered the misconfigured cluster which exposed the personal information of more than 100,000+ gamers. But the report sent by Diachenko bounced from support rep to support rep for weeks before being fixed at last.
Razer issued an official statement to confirm that the issue has been resolved.
“We were made aware by Mr. Volodymyr of a server misconfiguration that potentially exposed order details, customer and shipping information,” the company further added. “No other sensitive data such as credit card numbers or passwords were exposed.
“The server misconfiguration has been fixed on September 9, before the lapse being made public.”
Razer also apologized for their mistake, “We would like to thank you, sincerely apologize for the lapse and have taken all necessary steps to fix the issue as well as to conduct a thorough review of our IT security and systems. We remain committed to ensure the digital safety and security of all our customers.”
As for how to keep oneself safe; on your part, there is very little that you can do about personal data leakages on part of companies. What you can do is to assess how much of your data is in the hands of companies. Moreover, consumers need to be aware of social engineering attacks and phishing techniques to avoid giving out sensitive information. Stay safe and stay vigilant everybody.
