Shardbound resurgence is on the cards as Bazooka Tango and Immutable join hands to launch it as Web3 game using Immutable zkEVM. A look at the new blockchain-powered version of the indie card-battler.
Immutable Games has announced a partnership with game studio Bazooka Tango to adapt Shardbound, a 2017 turn-based tactical collectible card game, into a blockchain game. The move is an attempt to showcase the benefits of blockchain in gaming and create high-quality, breakout games for the crypto world. Immutable Games is the company behind Ethereum scaling network Immutable X, which will be used to power the blockchain-based version of Shardbound.
What is Shardbound?
Shardbound is a combination of a tactical RPG and a collectible card game. Players build decks of cards and use them to battle against other players on a 2D battlefield. The goal is to defeat the opposing player’s hero unit. Each hero has unique abilities and can level up throughout the course of the game. The game features a variety of different factions and card types, which can be combined in various ways to create different strategies.
Revival of Shardbound as a Web3 Game
Immutable has announced that it will be taking a “hands-on” approach to Shardbound’s development, making it the first external game on the network where the company will provide “end-to-end Web3 gaming strategy and execution.” Additionally, Shardbound will be one of the first games to exist on the newly-announced Immutable zkEVM network, which is built on Polygon’s open-source zkEVM technology. This means that the game’s NFT transactions will occur on an Ethereum-compatible network where purchases can be bundled for faster processing and lower fees.
Shardbound development saw a halt after the studio ran out of funding. However, the game is in revival as a Web3 game on Immutable zkEVM. This new version of the game is powered by blockchain technology and is built on Immutable X, which is a Layer-2 scaling solution that uses zero-knowledge proofs to ensure that the game is fast and secure.
Bo Daly, the founder, and CEO of Bazooka Tango, expressed his excitement about developing a new and improved version of Shardbound with new Web3 elements. Daly revealed that he had been following Shardbound’s development since its inception. Moreover, he considers it to be a deeply strategic game that is perfect for competition, streaming, and community building. As someone who has previously worked on games like Vainglory and Red Dead Redemption, Daly believes that Shardbound offers a world with endless possibilities and a wealth of untold stories.
Gameplay on Immutable zkEVM
The gameplay of Shardbound on Immutable zkEVM is similar to the original game, but with a few key differences. Players still build decks of cards and use them to battle against other players on a 2D battlefield. However, the game now has a blockchain-based economy, which means that players can earn rewards for participating in the game.
The game also features a governance system that allows players to vote on changes to the game’s rules and economy. This ensures that the game is truly community-driven and that players have a say in how the game evolves over time.
One of the biggest advantages of playing Shardbound on Immutable zkEVM is the use of zero-knowledge proofs. It helps ensure that the game is fast and secure. This means that players can enjoy a seamless gameplay experience, without having to worry about issues like slow transaction times or security risks.
In-Game Assets and Marketplaces
One of the key features of Shardbound on Immutable zkEVM is the use of in-game assets. These digital assets are tradable on various marketplaces. Moreover, these assets include cards, skins, and other items that have the utility to customize a player’s deck and hero unit.
The use of blockchain technology ensures that players have true ownership of their in-game assets. Additionally, players can trade these digital assets on various marketplaces. This creates a new economy around the game, where players can earn rewards for participating in the game. Besides they can also trade their assets for other cryptocurrencies.
The game also features a variety of different marketplaces, each with its own unique set of features and benefits. This ensures that players have plenty of options when it comes to trading their in-game assets.
According to Poulson, who previously worked at Riot Games and Bandai Namco, the Immutable team considered hundreds of games before choosing Shardbound to revive. Poulson explained that Immutable saw tremendous potential in Shardbound because it was “beautiful and well-made.” She also noted that Shardbound’s digital card-based game genre makes it an excellent candidate for Web3 integrations. Integrations such as NFTs, where players can own the assets they use in matches. Poulson added that the game resonated with the team during playtesting and demonstrated a great deal of care in its development.
