CCP Games, which made Eve Online, a space mmo, raises money to use blockchain and Web3 technology to work on an upcoming AAA game project. CCP Games secures $40M funding to ensure full-scale development of innovative AAA Game project.
CCP Software, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Eve Online, has just received $40 million from external investors.
Andressen Horowitz ran the fundraising campaign with the goal of using blockchain technology to finish making a brand-new AAA game set in the EVE universe.
The funding also included a massive contribution from BITKRAFT, Nexon, Kingsway Capital, HASHED, and some other investors.
New Eve Online Game with Blockchain Features
With a complete focus on persistence, composability, and completely open third-party development to build a new interaction between virtual worlds and gamers, the company said in a press statement that the new EVE game will include on-chain features.
Hilmar Veigar Petursson said in a statement: “Since its inception, CCP Games’ vision has been to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life”.
He went on to say, “Now, with the progress made in blockchain, we can create a new universe that is deeply infused with our knowledge of player agency and autonomy, giving players new ways to interact.”
This new project will build a new interaction between virtual worlds and gamers by utilizing smart-contract blockchain technology that is focused on resilience, consistency, and completely open third-party development.
Key game features are already using on-chain technology. This year marks the 20th anniversary of EVE Online, which boasts a passionate fan base of gamers. These gamers go into the further categorization of groups inside its sci-fi setting.
The video game has inspired a yearly convention in Iceland, a variety of spin-off games, and even novels that detail real-life conflicts between its bitter opposing groups.
Even though this is CCP’s first venture into Web3 gaming, Pétursson has long been inspired by the way blockchain technology has the ability to transform ideas like user ownership and open marketplaces in the gaming industry.
More About CCP Games
CCP is a leading independent game developer that gets a lot of praise for its art, technology, and game design. These characteristics encourage emergent behavior and give players engaging tools for self-expression.
CCP is on a drive to make virtual worlds more interesting than the actual world. When the company was started in 1997, its main goal was to grow and break new ground on all levels.
CCP made a name for itself as a pioneer of cutting-edge massively multiplayer games with the release of EVE Online in May 2003, collecting multiple awards and winning praise from critics all over the world. CCP has its headquarters established in London, Shanghai, Reykjavik, and Iceland.
Andreessen Horowitz supports skillful entrepreneurs that act quickly and think broadly. Moreover, those who show dedication to creating the next great technology brands.
The company, founded by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, offers entrepreneurs access to knowledge and perceptions in various fields.
Some of these fields are innovation, executive and technical skills, marketing research, business development, marketing, and brand creation.
In May 2003, Eve Online went live. Pearl Abyss of South Korea, the creator of Black Desert, acquired CCP Games for $425 million in September 2018. It was a hefty figure for a business operating a game that has been popular for almost 20 years.
Yet, this novel concept required external funding. The game’s stunning space conflicts involving spaceships from several groups take place in a futuristic universe.
Petursson also stated earlier that Eve Online itself would not include blockchain technologies, such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), despite a thorough discussion.
Jumping into the Web3
Pétursson revealed that the inspiration for this project first came to him in 2015. Someone asked back then if it would be possible to store game assets on the Bitcoin network.
Pétursson admitted that he didn’t know much about the blockchain, but he started talking to people and researching it.
He observed the emergence of CryptoKitties in 2017, which offered NFTs that anyone could buy and sell. The business started looking into its own projects.
However, there were a lot of restrictions in place at the time, such as scaling up the transactions to huge quantities. Pétursson was still under fascination because the environment demanded high intellectual standards.
According to Peturrson, the addressable market for blockchain games in 2020 did not provide much opportunity for CCP to act. We have analyzed the challenges associated with handling cryptocurrency.
And predict it might take five to ten years before a blockchain game could truly qualify as a blockbuster app.
“I’m not sure necessarily that it will be a tipping point.” But you could foresee a time where there’s a killer app, where you just really have to get involved regardless of whether you need to figure something out, and that pulls in a wave of people and kind of starts an avalanche.”
