Electronic Arts became a victim of a massive attack from hackers where the studio lost the source code of its various games including FIFA 21 and the engine Frostbite. Moreover, hackers also got away with internal development tools. The attack was reported by Motherboard earlier this week.
According to Motherboard, the underground hacking forums consisted of information where the hackers claimed that they have “full capability of exploiting on all EA services.” Besides, the posts on hacking forums also asserted that the hacking group has breached EA’s data and accessed the complete source code of FIFA 21 as well as its matchmaking tools. In addition to FIFA 21, the hackers claim to have accessed the source code of Frostbite Engine which is powering Battlefield 2042.
Data Breach EA
The hacking forum also claimed that the hackers have nicked more than 780GB of data that also included development frameworks and proprietary tools. Moreover, hackers have now started to advertise the stolen data for sale in various hacking communities.
EA spokesperson also commented on the situation and confirmed that indeed EA has suffered a data breach. The spokesperson also confirmed that the files accessed by the hackers are also affected. However, there was no breach in players’ data and no player information was shared according to the EA spokesperson.
“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy.
“Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.”
