Epic Funding And Epic Future!
Epic Games is now valued at $17.3 billion after concluding an epic funding deal of $1.78 billion. This investment came in the form of primary capital as well as secondary purchases. To put it simply, some investors bought new shares while others bought shares from existing shareholders. Epic Games disclosed that the investment also included a strategic investment of $250 million from Sony, which was announced last month.
The investors that bought into the company are; Fidelity, fund, and accounts managed by BlackRock, Baillie Gifford, Light Speed Venture Partners, the Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan Board, and Hedge fund manager David Tepper among others. Some of the existing backers also increased their holdings.
Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney was delighted to have the support of leaders of the financial community and welcomed them as part of the Epic family.
In the multi-billion dollar gaming industry, Epic Games is now a force to be reckoned with thanks to the sustained popularity of Fortnite. The number of active players in Fortnite has now reached 350 million, a top revenue driver for the company despite its free to play model. The in-game purchases and payments for cosmetic items like skins are the only method that involves direct money.
Besides Fortnite’s game, the company also owns and is famous for its Unreal Engine which is being used by many top developers. Moreover, the company also competes with Valve’s Steam by running an online gaming store.
Epic Games was worth $15 billion in 2018 and if we compare its current status its $17.3 billion accounts for a 15% rise in its valuation. With such a huge revenue, it is still unclear whether the company has any plans to further expand and go public.
