Roblox Eyeing Life-like Facial Expression for Players by Acquiring Loom.

Get ready to experience real-time animation avatars in Roblox via Loom.ai.

Roblox, a user-generated gaming platform, has acquired a real-time animation startup studio, Loom.ai for an amount that is still undisclosed. Loom.ai is a startup based in San Francisco founded by a team of talented individuals hailing from Dream Works and Lucas Film. Loom.ai specialized in real-time facial animation technology and 3D avatars.

Roblox is eyeing to “accelerate the development of next-generation avatars,” as Loom.ai specialized in replicating facial expressions. To put things in simple words, players could interact with others in-game with expressions that will life-like and accurate.

This means that players could see the facial expression of their favorite artists during in-game concerts in Roblox. This year Roblox has organized several concerts like One World: Together At Home and Lil Nas X gig which was attended by millions.

Kiran Bhat and Mahesh Ramasubramanian, Co-founders of Loom.ai, shared their thoughts on the acquisition and said that they were proud to be part of the company and being given a chance to show their talent of building real-life facial expressions for millions on the kids platform.

Roblox’s CEO David Basucki shared his thoughts on the deal and said, “We believe as people share experiences virtually, their avatars should have the ability to express a full range of emotions. Loom.ai will accelerate making human co-experiences more immersive and personal, adding world-class facial animation technology as part of kid’s gaming company efforts to provide expressive emotive actions to avatars that will enable deeper connections for our community.”

Several big gaming companies are investing in real-time facial animation technology which has make facial animation tech firms grow and succeed in the gaming industry. Companies like Bandai Namco invested a whopping $3 million in avatar maker Genies and Epic’s acquisition of HyperSense and Cubic Motion shows the success of 3D avatar tech firms.
