Digital Games Spending September 2020
The month of September saw huge success in terms of the digital games market worldwide. According to Super Data, digital games earned a mammoth $10.7B in September 2020, an increase of 14% year over year. When compared to 2019, this year games earned a lot more across all platforms.
We can also see a significant increase in mobile game revenues that has gone up by 9%. PC on the other hand has also witnessed an 8% increase but the console earning topped them all by 40%, thanks to all the major titles that hit the market.
Now let’s talk about the best-selling digital games across all platforms.
NBA 2K21 tops the list with a huge digital sale of 1.9M digital copies. The digital console sales crossed the previous numbers by 19% and the in-game revenue also increased by 8%.
Moreover, September also saw people wanting to visit their past and take a stroll down the childhood memory lane. Nostalgia played a huge role in driving digital sales and games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 sold 2.8 million digital units. Super Mario 3D All-Stars sold 1.8M digital units which are undoubtedly the biggest launch figures ever for Mario title on Switch.
Now let’s steer towards PC, Crusader Kings III from Paradox sold 1.1M digital units breaking all previous records for PC strategy games. Though it earned a bit less when compared to its competitors because of the price gap as it was priced at $49.99 instead of a more common price of $59.99.
And lastly, let’s talk about Among US mobile version, a surprise package, to be honest, the number of active players on Among Us reached nearly as many players as Pokemon Go did during its peak time in August 2016. Though the game was launched two years ago its popularity sky-rocketed when popular Twitch streamers started playing it this summer. Though the game’s mobile revenue wasn’t enough to penetrate in the top 40 on mobile games the earnings were outstanding for a game that was developed by only three developers.
As always, an exciting report and insight from Nielsen and a great month for digital games.
